A Holiday Celebration of Belonging: The Mabazza Foundation and Age Strong Commission Bring Joy to Chinatown Seniors
Share
In December 2025, The Mabazza Foundation was honored to receive grant support from the City of Boston’s Age Strong Commission to host a special holiday celebration for seniors in Chinatown. Held at the Wang YMCA of Chinatown in collaboration with YMCA staff and community partners, this gathering was created with one simple but powerful purpose:
To remind our seniors that they are seen, cherished, and never alone.

Seniors and community members gather at the Wang YMCA of Chinatown for a warm holiday celebration hosted by The Mabazza Foundation.
For many years, holiday celebrations often focused on children and families, which are deeply important. But this year, The Mabazza Foundation wanted to create something especially for older adults, including seniors living with chronic illness, seniors facing isolation, and those who may find the holiday season emotionally difficult.
The holidays can be beautiful, but they can also be quiet. For some, they bring memories of loved ones, distance from family, health challenges, or the feeling of being forgotten in a season that seems to move quickly around them. This celebration was our way of saying:
You belong here.
Your story matters.
Your culture is honored.
Your presence brings light to this community.
Guests enjoy a shared meal, conversation, and fellowship in a multicultural holiday setting.
A First-of-Its-Kind Celebration for Chinatown Seniors
This was the first event of its kind hosted by The Mabazza Foundation for seniors in Chinatown through support from the Age Strong Commission. The Foundation provided 100% of the grant funding for the celebration, while the Wang YMCA of Chinatown generously provided in-kind rental space and support, helping transform the YMCA into a warm and welcoming holiday gathering place.
Together, we created an afternoon filled with food, conversation, kindness, laughter, and community connection.
Tables were set with care. Meals were shared. Friends gathered. New connections were made. The room carried the soft hum of many languages, many cultures, and many life stories coming together under one roof.
Community, culture, and care came together as seniors shared food and fellowship.
Honoring Heritage, Health, and Human Connection
Chinatown is a neighborhood rich with history, resilience, and cultural beauty. This celebration was designed not only as a holiday meal, but as a moment of recognition.
It honored the elders who helped build and sustain the community.
It honored immigrant stories, family traditions, and cultural pride.
It honored seniors who continue to show strength through illness, transition, and change.
It honored the quiet courage of those who keep showing up, even when life has not been easy.
The Mabazza Foundation believes that healing is not only medical. Healing can also happen at a table, through a smile, through music, through shared food, through being welcomed by name, and through the feeling that someone made room for you.
The event created space for seniors to feel celebrated, connected, and supported during the holiday season.
A Multicultural Room Filled With Warmth
The celebration reflected the spirit of Chinatown itself: multicultural, intergenerational, generous, and full of life. Guests came together across backgrounds and experiences, reminding us that community care does not need to be complicated. Sometimes it begins with a plate of food, a chair at the table, and a room filled with people who are glad you came.
The holiday season can sometimes feel like a bright parade happening outside the window. This gathering opened the door and invited everyone in.
There was warmth in the room.
There was dignity in the details.
There was joy in the simple act of being together.
Gratitude to the Age Strong Commission and Wang YMCA
The Mabazza Foundation is deeply grateful to the City of Boston’s Age Strong Commission for supporting this celebration and for investing in programs that uplift older adults across Boston.
We are also thankful to the Wang YMCA of Chinatown for its collaboration, in-kind space, and support. The YMCA has long served as a place where wellness, culture, and community meet. For this event, that mission came alive in a beautiful and deeply human way.
Together, we were able to create more than a holiday party. We created a moment of comfort, recognition, and togetherness for seniors who deserve to be celebrated not only during the holidays, but all year long.
The Mabazza Foundation, Age Strong Commission, and Wang YMCA helped create a meaningful celebration for Chinatown seniors.
Carrying the Light Forward
This event represents the heart of The Mabazza Foundation’s mission: to support emotional and mental well-being through art, care, community, and human connection.
As we look ahead, we hope this celebration becomes part of a larger tradition: one where seniors, people living with chronic illness, and community members from every background know that they are valued, remembered, and loved.
Because a holiday party is never just a party.
It is a table set with care.
It is a room made warmer by every person inside it.
It is a reminder that even in the coldest season, community can still bloom.
And in Chinatown this December, it did. 🌺
