About This Artwork
Artwork Description
A male dancer turns into the rhythm, his bare back illuminated against a turbulent field of color and texture. One arm extends outward in balance while the fabric around his waist erupts in crimson, turquoise, black, and flashes of gold.
His body is rendered with quiet precision, but the world surrounding him dissolves into expressive brushwork. Fabric, music, and atmosphere become almost inseparable. The sweeping garment does not merely follow his movement. It appears to release color into the room, transforming each turn into a burst of energy.
The Colors of Merengue captures the moment when control gives way to instinct and the dancer becomes inseparable from the rhythm.
Artist Statement
The Colors of Merengue explores masculine movement as both strength and surrender. The dancer’s face is turned away, allowing the architecture of his back, the extension of his arm, and the sweeping motion of the fabric to carry the emotional weight of the painting.
I wanted his body to feel grounded and human while the space around him became increasingly expressive. His exposed back conveys physical power, but also openness and vulnerability. Around him, crimson suggests heat and passion, turquoise brings freedom and vitality, and the darker passages give the movement depth and mystery.
This painting is not intended to document a single dance step. It captures the instant when music enters the body so completely that movement becomes instinct. He is no longer simply dancing through the color. He is creating it.
