THE CULTURAL DIALOGUE · 文化

Form. Memory.
Meaning.

A personal journey through Asian cultural influences, family heritage, the life of Boston’s Chinatown, and the art of belonging.

Culture enters our lives through the people we love, the places where we work, the stories we carry, and the art that helps us remember.

Boston’s Chinatown, a place of connection.

For more than six years, Uchenna Obinabo-Mabazza has worked in Boston’s Chinatown. The neighborhood’s daily rhythms, its relationships, and its sense of community have become part of his own story. The Flower Stand transforms the intimacy of an everyday encounter into a luminous meditation on care.

Filipino heritage within the Mabazza family.

Onolee Mabazza is Filipino. His heritage adds another personal dimension to the family’s connection with Asia—a living reminder that culture is carried through family, language, memory, and the experiences people share. The exhibition welcomes that wider perspective while allowing each tradition its own identity.

Many traditions. Distinct voices.

The imagery of Language of Blossoms and Moonlit Waters draws on Japanese-inspired clothing, architecture, and atmosphere. The Chinese visual motifs throughout the exhibition reflect a different tradition. Together, these influences create a dialogue across cultures without asking them to become the same.

Art as a doorway.

In Chinese gardens, a circular moon gate opens toward a changing view. Its shape appears in this exhibition as an invitation to see the familiar in a new light. Every painting opens another view of memory, tenderness, endurance, and hope.
