A CLOSER READING

The threshold of liberation.

In Ascension, the artist composes a vision of liberation at the threshold between the corporeal and the transcendent. A winged male figure emerges from a field of shadow, his body illuminated with theatrical intensity and held in a posture of solemn release. His arms extend outward, each hand bearing the remnants of broken chains. These chains function not as instruments of defeat, but as relics of a condition already overcome.

The figure’s exposed body establishes a tension between vulnerability and authority. Flesh, light, and movement converge in a form that appears both human and exalted. His upward gaze directs the composition beyond the limits of the earthly plane, toward the radiant presence above. This upper figure, suspended in a corona of gold and white, creates a commanding vertical axis through the painting, drawing the viewer from darkness into illumination.

The wings form the emotional and visual architecture of the work. Spanning the canvas with sweeping force, they are built through strokes of crimson, ocher, ivory, umber, and deep shadow. Their presence is monumental. They carry the energy of fire, rupture, flight, and revelation. Rather than serving as ornament, the wings become the engine of the painting, the force through which the figure’s transformation is made visible.

The lower portion of the composition remains dense with fractured fabric, darkness, and painterly debris. Above, light expands around the figure’s torso, face, and wings, creating a dramatic ascent from confinement toward radiance. The brushwork is vigorous and atmospheric, allowing form to emerge and dissolve within the turbulence of color.

Ascension presents liberation as an act of profound becoming. The painting does not erase struggle. It elevates it into symbol. The chains remain visible, but their power has been broken. The figure stands in the aftermath of release, transformed by what he has endured and lifted into a state of command, radiance, and spiritual arrival.
