Survival
What Survives the Flame

A CLOSER READING
The fire no one else can see.
The flame is not merely behind the man; it appears to burn out of him. The heat reaches his face and chest. The image gives a body to the private violence of illness, fear, and exhaustion—the kind of burning the outside world may never see.
What survives is not untouched. He must find strength inside the very body that is suffering. The painting holds that brutal contradiction: to be consumed by an ordeal and still refuse to disappear.
