About This Artwork

Artwork Description

A monumental white waterbird rises above a deep blue lake, its sweeping neck and layered feathers commanding the landscape. An immense golden moon glows behind jagged mountains, casting a shimmering passage across the water. Beneath these towering forms, two travelers share a small wooden boat. Their presence gives the expansive scene an intimate human center.

Pink blossoms arch above a Japanese-inspired pavilion nestled among trees along the rocky shore. Midnight blue, turquoise, and emerald surround passages of amber, rose, and luminous white. With roots in post-divisionism, the painting uses distinct strokes of contrasting color to animate light and reflection. Across the lake, broken bands of blue and gold create a vibrating surface, while fine strokes of white and cool gray articulate the bird’s plumage. The composition balances the stillness of the travelers with the energy of color moving around them.

Artist Statement

Moonlit Waters explores companionship within a world of extraordinary scale. The two travelers are small beneath the bird, moon, and mountains, yet their shared passage gives the painting its emotional weight. Together, they occupy the heart of an immense and unfamiliar landscape.

The work’s delicate roots shape the way light moves through the scene. Separate strokes of blue, turquoise, and gold bring the water to life through their proximity and contrast. The moon’s reflection becomes a visible rhythm extending toward the boat, connecting the distant landscape to the travelers.

The monumental bird gives wonder a physical presence. Blossoms introduce delicacy, and the pavilion establishes a sheltered place along the shore. These elements form an imagined world in which nature, architecture, and human connection coexist.

At the center of Moonlit Waters is the reassurance of moving through life with another person. The landscape holds its mystery, while the small boat carries the certainty of companionship.
